PA – Physician Associate
Physician Associates (PAs) are healthcare professionals with a generalist healthcare education who work under the supervision if doctors to provide medical care as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.
They can help by:
- diagnosing and treating certain health conditions
- arranging blood tests etc
- performing physical examinations
ANP – Advance Nurse Practitioner
In General Practice it is generally understood to mean a nurse who has undertaken extra training in clinical assessment, including history-taking and physical examination, so they can safely manage patients presenting with undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions. As part of their training, they go on a prescribing course to allow them to prescribe certain medications.
ENP – Emergency Nurse Practitioner
An Emergency Nurse Practitioner, or ENP, is a specialist nurse who has had additional training to diagnose and treat minor injuries or illnesses in an emergency care setting.

Care Co-ordinators
Care Coordinators coordinate information on patients at their GP surgery or surgeries and proactively find patients with complex conditions or needs who may benefit from extra support.
GP Assistants
As part of the wider team in general practice, GP Assistants provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties, i.e. taking temperatures, blood pressure etc.
Nursing Associates
Nursing Associates work with healthcare support workers and registered nurses to deliver care for patients, working across all areas of nursing: adults & children.
