It’s important that vaccines are given on time for the best protection. Check the dates your child needs to have their vaccinations by and contact your GP.

Health Screenings

AAA Screening

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening is a test to check if there’s a swelling in your aorta, which is the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the tummy (abdomen).

In England, screening for AAA is offered to men during the year they turn 65.

Men aged 65 or over are most at risk of AAAs. Screening can help spot a swelling in the aorta early on when it can be treated.

University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) was one of the first six pioneer institutions in the country to implement screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Antenatal screening (tests during pregnancy)

You’ll be offered some screening tests during pregnancy to try to find any health conditions that could affect you or your baby.

The tests can help you make choices about further tests and care or treatment during your pregnancy or after your baby is born.

All screening tests offered by the NHS are free.

Bowel Screening

Bowel cancer is a common type of cancer in both men and women. About 1 in 20 people will get it during their lifetime. Screening can help detect bowel cancer at an early stage, when it’s easier to treat.

  • For patients age 60-74, a bowel screening kit is sent by post every 2 years.
  • 80% of bowel cancers occur in people over 60
  • Bowel Cancer is the 4th most common cancer in the UK
  • Bowel Cancer Screening can detect cancer before you have any symptoms
  • Bowel Cancer survival rates are much higher if found early, as treatment is more effective

For help & advice call the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Freephone on 0800 707 6060

Cervical Screening

Cervical screening (a smear test) checks the health of your cervix. All women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 should be invited by letter or text.

Important: Please note

If you are a transgender (trans) man registered with your GP as female, you may receive invitations for cervical screening. If you are registered as male you will not receive invitations, but your GP or practice nurse may be able to arrange an appointment for you if you have a cervix. If you are a trans woman you do not need cervical screening.

Please read the leaflet below for more information:

Diabetic eye screening

If you have diabetes you may be at risk of developing an eye condition called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can cause sight loss if it’s not treated.

Diabetic eye screening checks for signs of diabetic retinopathy, often before you notice any changes in your sight.

Finding and treating it early can prevent or reduce damage to your eyes and sight loss.

STI Screening

If you’re sexually active, it’s a good idea to get tested for STIs at least once a year, even if you feel fine or only have one sexual partner.

It’s a good practice to go for testing if you’re about to start a new relationship. Ask your partner to do the same.

If you have no STI symptoms, you can order a home STI testing kit:

Additional Services

Sick (fit) notes

If you’ve been off sick for 7 days or less

If you’re off work sick for 7 days or less, your employer should not ask for medical evidence that you’ve been ill. Instead, they can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. We call this self-certification.

If you’ve been off sick for more than 7 days

Non-NHS work

We are able to offer other private medical services and reports.

Please note, while GPs endeavour to complete requests within 10 working days, clinical work must take priority.

Reasons for charging fees

  • It is important to know that many GP services are not covered by the National Health, GPs are self-employed and have to cover the costs of their staff and building in the same way as any small business.
  • Consequently all practices will charge for the services they offer which are not covered by the NHS contract, including private medicals for HGV and insurances, etc.
  • In the case of the Market Harborough and Bosworth surgeries the income earned from private services is ploughed back into the practice and not taken as private income thus allowing for additional nurses, medical services, administrative cover or equipment purchase.
  • GPs do not have to carry out non-NHS work on behalf of their patients but our Partners do so although patients are also free to attend any surgery for private medical work.
  • We believe that our rates are competitive within the local area although all practices charge differing rates based on the British Medical Association guidance and recommendations.
